I wrote this vocal arrangement of George Shearing and George David Weiss’s “Lullaby of Birdland” in the fall of 2017. My high school students performed it twice in 2018: at the Berklee School of Music High School Jazz Festival in February, and at our spring concert in April. After an a cappella introduction, the original piano accompaniment by George Shearing joins the voices for the remainder of the tune. There are opportunities for solos throughout, whether as the melody or an improvised scat solo.
